Shay Mills, a veteran and an author, is a pillar in the writing community of connections and support. When he offered to let me review one of his books, it took me seconds to decide which one to read. Dark Bliss is a romance and a historical fiction with vampires. It was right down my alley.

The story takes place in the Antebellum South. Demisha, a runaway slave, is saved by a monster in the middle of the night. When she awakes, she finds herself on a neighboring plantation, but the place isn’t what it seems. It surprised Demisha to find that it is a front for smuggling slaves north to freedom.

Enoch, the mysterious owner of Hawkin’s Plantation, fell for Demisha as they take their nightly strolls in the rose garden. Their love blooms and Enoch needs to confess why he does not sleep at night. He is the monster that saved her.

Not your typical vampire story, Mills’ Vampires have some unique characteristics that were fun to discover as I read. The story, with its sweeping romance, had horror and erotica at its core with all the violence, gore, and taboo sex that comes with such plots. If you like dark and twisty with some heat splashed in, then check out Dark Bliss, it will not disappoint. With a new edition forthcoming, keep your eye out for the new release!
